Palmer, Frederick. IN THE KLONDYKE: Including an Account of a Winter's Journey to Dawson. Scribner's Sons. 1899. First edition. 218pp. The author was going to accompany the government expedition for relief of the miners at Dawson. This expedition was cancelled as there was no famine in Dawson. So Palmer decided to get up a dog team and go to Dawson anyway, in the winter of 1897, instead of waiting for the thaw and going by boat. He partnered up with a dog puncher and a former artist. They made it to Dawson just before breakup. A scrace and interesting book. Dampstains to cover and pages, tip of corner of cover chewed off, otherwise very good. INV#1192. Dampstaining to all pages, mostly affecting the outer half of each page. The dampstains start at the top edge (middle of page) and extends about 1/8 inch into the page, by the time it reaches the outer top corner it's about 1/4 inch into the margins, then down the fore edge it increases its penetration until at the bottom it extends into each page about 3/4 of an inch, but still stays in the margins. The dampstain at the bottom edge is similar to the top edge. Externally the dampstains have discolored the front and back covers at the toe. Still a useable copy of a very scarce book. No dust jacket. Previous owner has taped in newspaper articles about the book. Walden, Arthur T. A DOG-PUNCHER ON THE YUKON. Houghton Mifflin. 1931 (1928). 289pp. Walden landed at Dyea in March 1896, and went over the Chilkoot Pass to the Yukon River, and down to Circle City. He was part of the stampede from Circle City to Dawson City, and later on down the Yukon River to Nome. Much on the use of dog teams during the gold rush, from the author's personal experiences. None other than William Ogilvie praises this book. A very important book on life and travel in Alaska and the Yukon Territory, around the time of the Klondike gold rush. INV#1158. Wirt, Loyal. ALASKAN ADVENTURES: A Tale of Our Last Frontier, and of 'Whiskers', Gallant Leader of the First Dog Team to Cross Alaska. Revell. 1937. First edition. 124pp. Wirt was sent, in 1899, from Sitka to Nome, by Gov. Brady, to look after the welfare of the stampeders of the Nome gold rush. He spent 6 days in Nome assessing the situation, and left for Seattle for food and medicla supplies. He brought these materials to Nome but realized much more was needed, and by mid-winter he headed out of Nome with a dog team for Katmai, where he was told a steamer would be. Upon reaching Katmai he discovered that they had only one steamer a year, and the next one was in four months. Wirt was able to convince the chief to make a daring winter crossing of Shelikoff Straits to Kodiak, in a three hole baidarka, where a ship could be caught south. He went to Washington, D.C., and made arrangments for a relief ship for Nome. An important and interesting book! Very good, in worn dust jacket. Signed by Loyal Wirt. INV#1156.
