January, 2008 - Block of the Month

 Double Star Block

This block measures 10 inches square (10 ½” X 10 ½” unfinished) and is a method using partial seam construction. The background and Fabric 1 are provided.

Background -              1 – 5 ¼” Square, cut it diagonally twice in an X for a total of 4 small triangles

                                    4 – 2 ½” X 4 ½” rectangles

Fabric 1 -       2 – 4 7/8” Squares, cut in half diagonally for a total of 4 large triangles.

Guild Member provides -     

Fabric 2 -                    1 – 5 ¼” Square, cut diagonally twice in an X for a total of 4 small triangles  Fabric 3 -                    1 – 2 ½” square

 1 - Diagram 1 - sew together two small unmatched triangles to make a small triangle pair.  Press the seam allowance in one direction.  Repeat to make a total of four small triangle pairs.

2 - Diagram 2 - sew together a large triangle and a small triangle pair to make a triangle-square.  Press the seam allowance toward the large triangle.  The pieced triangle-square should measure 4 ½” square, including the seam allowances.  Repeat with the remaining triangle pairs and large triangle. 

 

3 – Diagram 3 - sew a 2 ½”X 4 ½” rectangle to one side  (right side) of a triangle-square to make a star unit.  Press the seam allowance toward the rectangle.  The pieced star unit should measure 6 ½” X 4 ½”.  Repeat to make a total of four star units.

 

4 – Diagram 4 - place a star unit along the top edge of the 2 ½” square.  Sew together, stopping ½” from the corner.  Press the seam allowance toward the start unit.

 

5 – Diagram 5 – Sew a second star unit to the left hand edge of the Step 4 unit.  Press the seam allowance toward the star unit.  Then join a third star unit to the bottom edge of the unit.  Press the seam allowance toward the star unit.

 

6. – Add the remaining star unit to the right hand edge of the Step 5 unit and sew the remaining portion of the first star unit in place to make a Double Star block.  Press the seam allowance toward the star units.  The pieced double Star block should measure 10 ½” square, including the seam allowances.
