Our History:

Kodiak Bear Paw Quilters Guild was formed in 1992 to generate appreciation and enthusiasm in the art of fine quilt making, to provide educational programs, cultural experiences, historical and current information in the art and craft of quilting, to hold meetings, seminars and quilting bees for the education and enjoyment of our members and the general public. The Kodiak Bear Paw Quilters Guild attempts to meet the needs of members in a fun and positive way with as few rules as possible.  In fact, we don't call them rules - we call them guidelines.

The Guild meets the 2nd Sunday of each month from 1pm to 4pm at the Bayside Community Center located next to the Bayside Fire Station. The Board of Directors meets the Thursday following our monthly meeting at the Kodiak City Library at 7pm. Everyone's favorite meeting activity is Show-n-Tell where members bring in the project(s) they have been working on and share them.  Sometimes we have programs highlighting a special technique, skill, or block or we may demonstrate a new product, show videos or slides. We also have many all day or half-day sewing get togethers where we work on service quilts or our own projects.

The Kodiak Bear Paw Quilters became members of the Kodiak Arts Council in 2001. Membership in the Kodiak Arts Council provides the guild with a a nonprofit status, use of a raffle permit, and numerous other advantages in managing a small, not-for-profit organization. Our membership helps the Kodiak Arts Council expand beyond the performing arts and into visual arts. We have a great relationship that helps our members be recognized as the fiber artists that they are.

The Guild is also a member of the Association of Pacific Northwest Quilters whose purpose is to promote the art of quiltmaking and to encourage and reward quiltmakers in the geographic Pacific Northwest region.
