Adney was the special correspondent in the Klondike for Harper's Weekly, and he did his job exceedingly well. Pierre Berton, THE eminent Klondike historian (who grew up in Dawson) says "...of more than 100 volumes that deal directly with the [Klondike gold rush]...only two, in my opinion, make any attempt to describe the stampede as a whole. These are Tappan Adney's The Klondike Stampede.... Mahony was one of the great Klondike characters, having carried a piano over the Chilkoot Pass on his back. He mushed 400 miles, having in his sled the frozen body of Judge Humes. He struck it rich in mining, knocked out the prizefighter Tommy Burns, and knew Jack London, Robert Service, Soapy Smith, and Tex Rickard. A fun book. Very good. Erspamer, Alice. KLONDIKE WIDOW. Pagent Press. 1953. First edition. 239pp. The author was born just before her father announced to the family that he was going to Klondike the next morning. Her father was British, 20 years older than his wife. The family would sell their North Dakota house. The pregnant wife and toddler would live off half of this money in Tacoma, while the husband took half to stake his outfit and transportation to the Klondike. After 3 years prospecting without luck, he wrote that "I'm pushing farther into the interior. The family, destitute, survived by running rooming houses. Later, the husband was booked to return to Tacoma on the 'Islander', which was lost. He was reported dead, but had sold his ticket at the last moment, which the family didn't know. He went back to prospecting, only to fail again. He turned up, rising from the dead, at the family's residence 10 years later. His reception was colder than any Klondike winter he had faced, and returned north. Ironically, the wife helped stake a Klondike prospector who did find gold, and she was a partner in the successful claim. One often hears of men deserting their families for the Klondike; here is one story. Very good. Grinnell was more successful as an ornithologist, of which he gained considerable fame. He wrote Birds of the Kotzebue Sound Region, which was published in 1900. Hall, James A. STARVING ON A BED OF GOLD; or the World's Longest Fast. Santa Cruz, Calif., Press of the Sentinel, 1909. 149 p. An account of the author's experiences while lost on Seward peninsula, Alaska, from July to September, 1900. Hall, a prospector in the Nome gold rush, was lost for 67 days in the wilds of the Seward Peninsula. He had with him only some matches, a knife, and a blanket. His survival story was so amazing that he was pressured into writing down his story, and in 1909 he published it in a very small edition. One of the great rarities of Alaska gold rush literature. Lynch raised a huge grubstake in 1897, but instead of climbing the Chilkoot pass in winter, decided to take a steamer to Saint Michael in 1898. He reached Dawson on July 27, 1898. He started buying and selling supplies in Dawson, at considerable profit. He is also one of the few stampeders arriving 'late' in 1898 to have successfully obtained a paying mining claim, undoubtedly due to his reported $50,000 grubstake. Fine. So Palmer decided to get up a dog team and go to Dawson anyway, in the winter of 1897, instead of waiting for the thaw and going by boat. He partnered up with a dog puncher and a former artist. Dr. Whiting was a true gold rush pioneer. In fact he was the doctor who performed the autopsy on Soapy Smith! He was the doctor on Mike Heney's staff during the building of the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway in 1898, and later in Cordova during the building of the Copper River & Northwestern Railroad. This is his story.

Wiedemann, Thomas (The Klondike Kid). CHEECHAKO INTO SOURDOUGH. Binfords & Mort; Metropolitan Press. 1942. 266pp. "Authentic narrative of the Eliza Anderson expedition to Alaska in 1897. The book is well edited. The author, a college student, obtained a job as steward's helper on the dilapidated old "Eliza Anderson". Storm-tossed, this old tub barely reached Unalaska, where she was abandoned, part of the passenger list returning to Seattle and the remainder, including the author proceeding to St. Michael on the 'Baranof', a whaler. The voyage upriver to Dawson was undertaken on the 'W.K.Merwin', which pushed a scow ahead of her. It was now Oct. 10th and there was insufficient time to reach Dawson before the freeze-up. The author spent the winter on the scow, tied up in a blind slough opposite the Eskimo village of Nunabislogarth. A complete description of Eskimo life ensues. Dawson was reached in 1898. There Mr. Wiedemann worked a claim on a 'lay' during the following winter, cleared $5,000, returned to San Francisco in 1899, and there earned the title of 'Klondike Kid'. He blew his entire capital in reckless living and arrived back in Seattle with the same sum he had when he left in 1897, to wit, ten cents!" Ricks. Good, in hardbound/softbound hybrid.
