Polar Lights

 

2007 – 2008 has been declared the 4th International Polar Year (IPY).  In honor of the IPY, the United States Postal Service has issued a sets of stamps featuring the aurora borealis, the northern lights and the aurora australis, the southern lights.  The stamps are in a sheet of 20 featuring 10 of each design.  These stamps pay the current 41¢ first class rate.

 

The photograph of the aurora borealis was made by Fred Hirschmann of Wasilla, AK. It shows the aurora borealis over the Talkeetna Mountains in Alaska. The photograph of the aurora australis was made by Per-Andre Hoffmann of Stuttgart, Germany who resides in Manila, Philippines.
