Chugach and Tongass National Forest

The Chugach was established on July 23, 1907 by President Roosevelt, with help by Gifford Pinchot, the then head of the Forest Service.  The purpose was primarily for fish and wildlife conservation.

Today, the Chugach is the second largest in the National Forest System at 5.4 million acres.  In addition to its magnificent landscape, it provides thousands of Alaskans with their livelihood and recreation.  Its wildlife is unparalleled in this modern world.  The forest is divided into three distinct geographic areas: the Kenai Peninsula, Prince William Sound, and the Copper River Delta.

The Tongass dates from 1902, when the Alexander Archipelago Forest Reserve was established.  Five years later, the Tongass National Forest area was added to the system. In 1908, the Tongass and Alexander Archipelago were consolidated by presidential proclamation into a single national forest - the Tongass.  Today, it is the largest national forest in the country with 16.9 million acres stretching along the coast from Yakutat Bay to Portland Canal.

Although much has changed over the last 100 years, the hardy men and women who laid the groundwork for the Tongass would still recognize the important work that happens on the national forest today.  Their early days of hardship and challenge laid a strong foundation on which to build a legacy of a century of “caring for the land and serving people.”
