Celebrating Alaska’s Constitution
The fifty-five delegates who drafted the state Constitution in 1955-56 believed in Alaska, in its great future. They knew that they were taking a major step toward statehood, and that they were creating the foundation document for the future state. Alaska’s constitution provides for the basic rights and protections of the people. It establishes the structure for the state - the executive, legislature, and judiciary - and for local government - Cities and boroughs. It provides for public education, the university, and public health and welfare. The Constitution spells out that resources will be managed for the maximum benefit of the people, and that all will he treated equally. The power of taxation shall never be surrendered, and public funds are never to be used except for a public purpose.
We have lived with this constitution for fifty years, and it has served us well. It is now up to the current and future generations to make sure that the constitutional right to privacy and other individual rights are fully preserved and that government serves the interests of its people.
