BOOKS AVAILABLE

Eventually, our plans for this page will include frequently-updated news about new books on the haiku scene, comments about our favorites, and information about how to obtain them.

William J. Higginson's Haiku World, An International Poetry Almanac (Kodansha International, 1996, ISBN 4-7700-2090-2), is at the top of our list of favorites, even before we have a list.  Many haijin begin each season by reading through that season's entries in the book. It's especially encouraging here in Alaska to read the spring entries when the taku winds are still keeping temperatures well below zero and our fellow poets are already writing cherry blossom haiku.

Each year since 1993, the Haiku Society of America has published a members' anthology that is like a haiku time capsule for the year.  Every HSA member who submits haiku for this publication is guaranteed that one will appear in the anthology.  Such an approach could result in very lopsided quality, but these collections are extremely well done and thoroughly enjoyable.  I eagerly await each year's offerings.  Check the HSA website for information about how to obtain copies of the anthologies that are still in print.

The 2000 anthology Crinkled Sunshine contains 189 poems, including four haiga and two concrete haiku.  It's 56 pages, perfect bound; brown ink on high-quality tan paper.  Price is $9. including postage, and it may be ordered from the editor:

D. Claire Gallagher, 864 Elmira Drive, Sunnyvale, CA 94087-1229 (make checks payable to D. Claire Gallagher).

Claire also has copies of her small chapbook How Fast the Ground Moves which was the Virgil Hutton Memorial Award Manuscript winner in 2001-2002. Price is $6 postpaid.
