CAP MODEL ROCKETRY PROGRAM

6.b.(3)(a) Range Officer. The Ranger Officer must be at least 18 years old, a CAP senior member, or a phase

IV cadet. The Ranger Officer will always be responsible for all aspects of a CAP model rocketry activity to

    include operations, management, and certification.

6.d. Official Unit Rocketry Events. All Activities involving a launch must be preformed at an official unit

rocketry events cannot be counted toward certification for model rocketry awards. The Alaska Wing Director

of Aerospace Education (AKW/ET) must be notified of all official rocketry events in advance. A Range

Officer must also be selected and approved by AKW/ET. If the selected member does not meet minimum

qualifications, another member must be selected. When confirmed, the Range Officer will coordinate the date,

location, and scope of the event with AKW/ET.

9.d. Certification of Model Rocketry Awards.

(1) Purpose. Alaska Wing standards for CAP model rocketry program completion are more defined than

suggested in CAPM 50-20. This supplement provides a more structured program that is easily implemented at

the unit level and standardizes the experiences of the cadets. The options offered in each Program

Requirement (PR) and Leadership Requirement (LR) use a form to guide the certification process. The

following paragraphs outline the procedures for certification. In no way do they restrict the options available

for other official unit rocketry events.

(2) General Rules. Each Pr of LR must be certified on AKW Form 50 immediately upon completion. For

safety reasons, once a cadet begins the certification process by completing any PR or LR, they must

successfully complete the program within twelve months. After those 12 months the entire process must be

restarted on a new form and no previous training will count toward certification. Each time a PR is attempted,

the attempt must be noted prior to launch in the remarks section of the "CAP Model Rocketry Launching

Data Sheet". Failure to complete that requirement must also be noted in the remarks section of the same sheet.

(3) AKW FORM 50. This form will be used to track the progress of the cadet through the model rocketry

training program. The form can be found on the Alaska Wing Headquarters website

(http://www.AKWG.cap.gov) and shall be kept in the cadet’s personnel file unless in use at an approved

event. As the cadet meets the criteria described for a requirement, that criterion is checked off. When all

criteria within a requirement are checked off the Range Officer of a designated representative will initial the

requirement in the box to the right. When all requirements have been initialed, the form can be certified. The

only personnel authorized to certify this form are the Squadron Commander, Deputy Commander for Cadets,

Testing Officer or Aerospace Education Officer. A copy of the AKW Form 50 must be sent to AKW/ET for

documentation after completion of the program requirements.

        (a) Completion of PR5 and LR4 require the cadet to complete blocks I though IV on the back of the form

and to discuss them with the Range Officer. The purpose of the communication is to identify any

discrepancies on the form and provide the cadet an opportunity to orally correct all the answers to 100

        percent.

        (b) Completion of PR6 requires the cadet to write a memorandum to the Range Officer in accordance with

CAPR 10-1. It must include an overview of the official rocketry events completed, a self-evaluation of

individual performance, and a conclusion involving comments or suggestions for the event staff.

( c) Completion of LR4 and LR5 require that service in these roles be noted in the personnel participating

section of the associated launch CAP Model Rocketry Launching Date Sheet.

        (d) Completion of LR6 requires cadet to be individually debriefed on the training program by the Range

        Officer.

11. Additional Resources. The NAR website (http://www.nar.org) offers model rocketry information, the most

recent "United States Model Rocketry Sporting Code", and instant NAR senior membership. The CAP

Supply Depot Aerospace Education catalog (http://www.aerospace-ed.com) offers training materials, rockets

and motors. Estes Educator (http://www.esteseducator.com) offers training materials and other resources.
