Officially our winter season ended last week. We would like to thank you for supporting and participating in our program, and we hope that all of you achieved your goals.
At Junior Nationals our club took 2nd place and we had some excellent results in all of the classes.  Marion Woods became the first AWS Junior to win all 4 gold medals in the J2 class,
and we had a number of podium and top-ten performances in the individual races and the relays.  Our Masters also performed very well this year, skiing well in the AMH Anchorage Cup series as well as the Tour,
with several travelling to the Master’s World Cup in Canada.  We will send you more detailed results of all the accomplishment of our AWS athletes later this week.
Next week, we will start our Spring session so please check for workout times and locations on our website. Also, don’t forget to email your 2010-11 season evaluation forms along with your future goals
so we can keep improving our individual coaching plans for you. As always there will be a lot of activities this spring so keep checking our web site. Later this month,
we would like to meet with the parents of our juniors to discuss future plans and brainstorm ideas for the coming season.
On a financial note, our prices did change slightly to reflect increased costs. There are scholarship opportunities available for those who are experiencing
some financial hardship. Please talk to me if you have any questions about it.

An exciting final day of racing at US National Championships in Rumford Maine!  Today was the 1.4km freestyle sprint,
and AWS racers gave a strong showing in the qualifier. Annie Liotta and Marion Woods qualified for the women’s open heats
and both finished 4th in their respective quarterfinal heats.  Silas Talbot, Mackenzie Kanady and Jessie Yeaton all qualified for the
Junior heats, where Silas and Mackenzie dominated their competition with some savvy racing, and won the Junior field to close out
the week of racing.  It seemed like a Besh Cup race with all the Alaskans in the finals!

There were some trying conditions, but it showed what an organization can do when they have snowmaking, as without it the races would
not have been possible.  It seems the average age of the volunteers was over 65, but they worked their hearts out all week,
and in the end all the races went off relatively without a hitch.  Thursday was an interesting day, with the senior men doing 12 laps of a 2.5km
loop for their 30km race, and the women doing 8 loops for their 20km race.  The race had originally been scheduled as a mass start, but that wasn’t
possible with the shortened loops, so we got to watch a lot of skiers going around and around and around.  The juniors only raced 5 and 10km,
so that was a little less hectic.  AWS had some good results that day as well, with Jessie Yeaton finishing as 6th place junior, Annie Liotta was 9th,
Marion Woods was 13th, Silas Talbot was 6th, and Peter Mamrol had another great race to get 13th junior, but 2nd J1.  This race solidified Annie, Marion
and Peter’s selection for the US team travelling to Sweden for the J1 Scando Cup trip.  In other news, a number of AWS alums (that still train with
the team in the summer) qualified for World Junior and U-23 teams.  Scott Patterson, Andrew Dougherty and Tyler Kornfield will lead the US
team going to Estonia for the World Juniors, and will be joined by Caitlin Patterson and Lex Treinen on the U23 squad.  Eric Packer also was
selected for the U23 team, but declined the invitation.

We are so proud of all of skiers who competed here in Rumford this week.  Not everybody had the races they had hoped for, but they kept fighting
all week, and that is what it is all about.  Good experience was gained, both in dealing with big races and with dealing with less than ideal
conditions for racing.  As for us coaches, we are tired but pleased with the weeks racing.  Waxing went pretty smoothly, we had good skis
all week for the most part, and some real rockets on several days.  It’s always good to remember the acronym KISS: Keep It Simple, Stupid!

So, we are looking forward to coming home, it sounds like the trails are getting back into shape, we hope the training and racing is going well, and
we look forward to seeing you all again soon.
Cheers,
Jan and Ben

Overwhelming interest in midday sessions led us to make some changes in our schedule in order to accommodate
our existing as well as new members. To maintain good quality workout and safety on the trails we need to create two midday group sessions.
First group will be on Monday and Wednesday and second Tuesday and Thursday 12:00-1:00pm.
Please let us know as soon as you can which group would you be interested in so we can figure out our coaching needs.
Program is design to challenge all of you and address different fitness level and different goals.
Also, for those of you who are interested in bringing your skiing to higher level you are going to have an option to sign up for all four workouts a week.
For all of you who are interested in joining please let us know as soon as possible since we have limited openings.
We want everyone to get good experience and attention at our club and have some fun. I look forward to see you all soon.

Sincerely

Jan Buron

2010 US Junior Olympic Nordic Ski Championships saw impressive performances by skiers from the Alaska Winter Stars sports program, who won the competition for the top club team.  The 19 members the AWS program that competed for Team Alaska at the races in Presque Isle, Maine dominated both the Men's and Women's Club Team categories, as well as the Combined category.  This is the second time in three seasons that the AWS team has won all of these categories, helping to establish the Anchorage-based club as the most successful junior development club team in the country.  AWS skiers include Tyler Kornfield (US Classic Sprint Champion 2010, US Junior World Team Member), Scott Patterson (multiple Junior Olympic gold Medalist, 3x Alaska State Skimeister, 2010 US Junior World Team Member), Caitlyn Patterson (former State Skimeister, 2010 US Junior World Team Member), and Eric Packer (2010 US Junior World Team Member).  AWS skiers Annie Liotta, Kate Backstrum and Karina Packer also qualified for the 2010 J1 Scandinavian Cup team that traveled to Finland to compete against the best junior racers in Norway, Sweden and Finland.  We are very proud of all of our skiers and of their accomplishments, and wish them continued success in the future.  We would also like to thank our program sponsors: Toko  Wax Company, Anchorage Fracture & Orthopedic Clinic Without their help we would not be able to do what we do.

AnnaP.jpgInterview with Tyler Kornfield (US Sprint Champion) by Anna Price

Tyler Kornfield, one of last year Service High graduates, has gone on to make

history- as the youngest U.S. National Cross Country Ski Champion. From Monday,

January fourth, through Friday the eighth, the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships

were held in Anchorage’s newly re-vamped Kincaid Park. Kornfield competed in the

freestyle and classic sprints as well as skiing the 15 kilometer freestyle and 10 kilometer

junior classic races.

Kornfield is an all-round fantastic skier, but the 18 year old really shows his true

power in the sprint races. On Monday’s freestyle sprint, Kornfield finish 4th behind two

out-of-state skiers, and local, former teammate Mike Hinckley, one of this year’s

Olympic Ski Team hopefuls. What was truly amazing was Kornfield’s 2nd place finish on

the 1.5 kilometer classic sprint. Tyler was behind leader Erik Soederstroem, of Sweden,

by just .2 of a second.  More………..

The AWS "Buy/Sell" page is up-to-speed again.  If you have anything to sell or are looking for equipment/clothes to buy, send a notice to Mike Price <m.r.price@acsalaska.net> and describe the item(s), give a price (free is okay too), and give some contact information.  Each item will have a posting and remove date (two weeks after posting) so that the list stays fresh.  If you want to keep the item posted, just email me and let me know.  If you're looking for something, check the list often by going to AWS home page and click on the "BUY/SELL" button.
