In Search of The Perfect Name

After purchasing my first three alpacas I began searching for that 'just right' name for the first alpaca farm in Anchorage, Alaska. There were many possibilities marching through my head, but the search had to be narrowed to something that was uniquely Alaskan. All of the Alaskan flower names were considered, and promptly rejected. Many of the Alaskan Village names and familiar places were considered, and also rejected. All the while the Alaska names and places and flowers were marching through my mind, the obvious choice was right before my eyes. Our farm sits atop a hillside above Anchorage and we have a spectacular view across Cook Inlet to Mount Susitna, which is locally known as Sleeping Lady.

Early one frosty morning, several weeks into my name search, my husband was making himself ready for work in the dim light of the bedroom. I stuck my nose out from under the covers and mumbled, "Why didn't I think of this before, I'll call the farm Sleeping Lady Alpacas." The all too bright and cheerful reply was, "Good idea, you never can get out of bed in the morning!" Despite the grumbling from under the covers, Sleeping Lady Alpacas was born.

The Legend of Sleeping Lady

The Legend of the Sleeping Lady is a very recent legend, as legends go, and it probably was not created by the indigenous people of the area. Possibly it should be called a folk story. This folk story begins by introducing a clan of peace loving giants who lived in the Anchorage - Cook Inlet area many years ago. Among these giants were a young man and woman who were in love and were soon to be marred. Before these young people could exchange their wedding vows a band of warriors moved into the area. These warriors were so threatening that there was no choice for the peace-loving giants - they had to protect their home and their way of life by going to war. The men gathered together and went off to fight the invading warriors. The women and children stayed behind and waited for the men to return home. Mount Susitna, or Sleeping Lady, is the sleeping form of the young woman who was about to be married. To this day she lies sleeping and waiting for her husband-to-be to return. This beautiful legend is very much in tune with the beauty and tranquility that surrounds our gentle peaceful alpacas.

Kiana, One of Sleeping Lady Alpacas' Foundation Females

Kiana's beautiful name replaces her official registered name and is an Eskimo word for something like "where three rivers come together". Kiana has wonderful mothering instincts, is a heavy milker, and is generally worth her weight in gold as a foundation matriarch of my small herd and represents what I'm breeding for... conformation, fiber, disposition, color, and a pretty face. Her yearling daughter, and 3 year old son are offered on my Sale page.

Kiana's registered name is Colorette, but she knows herself as Kiana. I could call for Colorette all day and get no response, but as soon as I call "Kiana", her head comes up to see what I want.

I have several lovely females, and two special males for sale. If you have any questions about alpacas, please feel free to contact me. I have more crias due!
