EYAK RIVER TRAIL

This trail is located east of Cordova at mile 5.5 on the Copper River Highway. The trail is 2.2 miles long. You can take this trail in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. The use of the trail is medium and it's an easy trail.

This trail follows the west bank of the Eyak River for one quarter mile before mildly ascending away from dense, mature timber into open, rolling muskeg meadows. These meadows and timber areas characterize the majority of the trail until about mile 2.1 where the flora composition changes to the delta habitat of dense alder and grasses. The trail intersects Eyak River at mile 1/5, where a dispered campsite is located, and parallels the river for remainder of the distance before reaching Mountain Slough.

Like many other muskeg trails in the area, the Eyak River Trail has numerous drainage problems. A boardwalk has been constructed on most of the trail to the fishing hold but if one is hiking further down the river to Mountain Slough, rubber boots are recommended.

This trail is an important access for fisherman during the Sockeye and Coho Salmon runs that usually occur in July, and August to mid-September.
