The Copper River Highway is one 50-mile road, which sits on top of some of the most beautiful wetlands in Alaska. If you drive slowly down the highway, you will be sure to see trumpeter swans, beavers, geese, bald eagles, moose and other inhabitants, once in a while you will come across a bear.
At mile 5 you will reach a bridge that crosses the Eyak River, there is a trail at this mile too; this trail goes along the river.
On mile 8-18 you will be able to spot Scott and Sheridan glacier from the highway, at mile 14 there is a road that leads right up to Sherdan's glacier. There is also a beautiful trail that you can hike this trail is one of my personal favorites, because of the scenery.
At mile 21, is another trail called Pipeline Loop Trail, you would want to bring your fishing rods on this one. But if you decide not to go fishing on one of the lakes on this trail you can walk a little further, and then the trail will run into McKinley Lake Trail, this trail is the easiest trail I have hiked. You can fish for trout, but if you don't want to fish, you can take this trail all the way to an old Gold mine. But if you don't want to combine the two trails, McKinley Lake Trail head is at mile 22.
Mile 42 is Clear Creek, this is a good spot to go fishing for Silver Salmon, and this is one of my favorite spots to fish, because you can catch one right after the other. But you will have to watch for hungry bears that are after the same salmon you may be fishing for.
At mile 42-45, you may want to look for Mountain Goats. So make sure you bring your bino's, also this spot isn't open to hunters.
At last you will reach mile 49 this is where the Million Dollar Bridge, and Child and Miles glaciers are located. The bridge was completed in 1910 for the Copper River and Northwestern Railways route to the Kenncott Copper mines.
The 1964 earthquake caused the bridge to collapse; temporary, stable repairs make it possible to cross, although at your own risk. The road isn't maintained beyond the bridge and continues for several miles although it is recommended for four wheel drive.
