MUSKEG MEANDER SKI TRAIL

This trial is at mile 18.6 on the Copper River Highway. It's 3.1 miles long, it's not used very often, recommended season is in the winter. The difficulty range is moderate.

This trail is the only cross-country ski trail on the district. The name Muskeg Meander best describes the trail's character. The trail weaves its way through many muskegs and short sections of forest. It gradually gains in elevation and ends up in a high muskeg overlooking the Copper River delta, the Heney Range and the Gulf of Alaska.

During the winter months, the Forest Service and the city ski club set ski tracks on the trail. Orange carsonite posts mark bridge crossings and deep holes in the muskeg sections. Orange diamonds on the trees mark the trail route. There are several loops in the trail and the skier has access to many other open muskeg areas. The trail is very wet during spring, summer and fall and is not recommended as a hiking trail.
