Well I'm creating this page, because a lot of people believe myth's and not reality. I know I did, I used to think Alaska was an icebox, and have 6 months of daylight and 6 months of darkness. But when I moved up here I found out thatthose theories were false.
First of All I would like to say ALASKA is a very big state, if you lay Alaska on top of the Lower 48. You will find that Alaska is 1/2 the size as the lower 48.
Alaska has 6 months of sunlight and 6 months of darkness.
NOT! Barrow Alaska is as far north as you can get they go two months of sunlight and two months of darkness. And the further south you get the more sun you get in the winter and the more darkness you get in the summer. Here in Cordova on Summer Solstice we are down to about 3 hours of darkness. And on winter Solstice we get down to 5 hours of sunlight.
Alaska is an icebox.
No it's not, like I said I grew up in Wisconsin and it's actually a lot warmer here in the winter then it is in Wisconsin, The Pacific ocean keeps us pretty much warm in the winter and cool in the summer, our weather is very much like Seattle weather. And actually it rains more in the winter then snow's. The average temp in the winter is 30 degrees above 0 and in the summer it's average is about 50 degrees above 0. But the further north you get the colder it gets. The weather from Cordova goes all the way down the panhandle.
Are you an Eskimo?
This one I laugh at all the time, I once told someone I was and I ate seal, and we Eskimo's live in igloo's *LOL*. But the truth is Eskimo's live above the Arctic Circle. Up in Barrow Alaska. And also 90% of Alaska's population is of people who moved here, only 10% are of people who grew up in Alaska.
Do you live in an igloo, or have electricity.
Actually igloos are used further up north pretty close to the Arctic Circle and above. I think they are used when the go hunting up north. And another thing I just can't believe people would ask if I had electricity or have a phone line. Well if I didn't I would be making this page, or I wouldn't have made such wonderful friends on the net.
Have you ever seen a Polar Bear?
No I have never seen a polar bear, I have seen Black Bears, and Grizzly Bears, but not Polar Bears. Polar Bears live up past the Arctic Circle. And that is not many of them up there either.
Have you ever seen a Penguin?
Actually I didn't know this until recently but Penguin's live in the South Pole not in the north.
Our Means of Transportation is dog sleds.
Not! I'm not really studying on this. But as far as I know there are dog sleds up here, but that's not what we are relying on though. And I really don't know anyone who lives in Cordova that owns a dog sled team. But I do see people run their dogs quit frequently. Meaning the dog owner drives their vehicle while the dog runs right beside the vehicle. But the only dog sled team I have heard of the ones that race in the idiorod, which is in Feb of every year. I'm sure though that maybe further up north they use dog sleds, but not as much as they use to. We now have snowmobiles (snow machines). Which took place of what dog sleds were used for.
