Upcoming Events

You'll have to forgive me, but I must confess that it STAGGERS me how underutilized Town Meeting is for announcements about upcoming events.  Think about it:  people go to all the trouble to organize something like a fundraiser -- they rent the space, they prep the food, they gather volunteers, they put up some flyers, maybe tell some friends and coworkers, and then they fail to do one of the most important things -- they don't MAXIMIZE their EASY opportunities to tell as MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE about the event.  And then the BIG KICKER is that I've even heard people complain after the fact that no one went to their event -- and all I can do is bellow inside my head "IF YOU'D JUST TOLD ME ABOUT IT, MORE PEOPLE WOULD HAVE BEEN THERE!!!"

I know, I know -- it's scary for many people to think about talking on the air about their event.  If you're one of those, please believe when I say I an NOT trying to make fun of you or belittle your fear.

But the burning question, to me, is this:  when you consider how big a difference it can make in your turnout to tell the radio audience about your event, and when you also consider how EASY it is to prepare a quick statement about an upcoming event (I even give you forms below), is this REALLY something to be so nervous about?

If I had a buck for every person that has been deathly afraid of being on the air that has later kicked themselves when they go for it and discover how easy it actually is, I could probably fund the city budget for the rest of my natural life.

Believe me friends -- this is as easy as it gets.  And to prove it, I'm even going to give you some scripts that you are free to use, VERBATIM if you like, or with creative modification.

Remember -- there is NO SHAME in reading a prepared statement.  Don't feel like it's cheating or unworthy of respect to prepare your remarks in advance.

And, too, you can always use these forms to prepare an email to send to the live address.  It doesn't quite have the punch coming from me that it would from you, but it's still an option.

NOTE: A VERY VERY smart thing to do is to plan a follow up call after your event takes place.  This does several things:
-- It lets the town know how the event went.
-- It gives you a chance to thank people.
-- You can report on how much money you raised and celebrate that fact.
-- If turnout wasn't great, you can emphasize the importance of people participating at your next event.
-- You'll make people feel like they were part of something that actually matters.
-- You'll make people that blew it off feel like they MISSED something that actually matters
Visit our section on follow-ups for scripts and ideas.

So, here are some skeletons.  Use them however you like, and I'll look forward to your call!!!!
