History

Central Lutheran began with Pastor L. O. Anderson and a small band of believers holding three meetings in July of 1943, and was formally organized as the Lutheran Association of Alaska on August 15, 1943 at the Pioneer Hall. The group was renamed the Lutheran Federation in early 1944. Central Lutheran was born on July 9, 1944. In 1945, a lot was purchased on 6th & F Street, the church moved in to the new building on Christmas Day 1947. After the 1964 earthquake, the church purchased new property at our current location on 15th Avenue and Cordova Street, and built the current facility. Over the decades, Central has hosted countless lutefisk dinners and potlucks, a weekly radio show and a television ministry, operated a preschool, and helped to grow and support new ELCA churches throughout Anchorage and Alaska.
