How much salt is in my cat’s food? A low-sodium diet is often recommended for cats with hypertension or heart disease. AAFCO’s minimum recommended sodium level is 50 mg per 100 kcal of energy in the food. The following non-prescription diets may serve your cat’s sodium-restriction needs as well as prescription diets. Note: caloric densities and nutrient availabilities are variable; consider the calorie-to-volume ratio when selecting a feeding plan for your cat.
