MY 1967 PORSCHE 912

** 1967 Porsche 912 - $4,700 ** / ** F-15 Fighter - $28 Million **
*** Driving Either One Of Them . . . . PRICELESS ! ! ! ***

On Father's Day 2003 . . . My wife gave me permission to buy a classic 1967 Porsche 912 from our local "Lemon Lot". At the time I was so taken with the car that I didn't realize what I was getting myself in for. I've since discovered, that when you buy a 36 year old foreign sports car, you're not only buying yourself a classy ride . . . you're also getting yourself a new hobby and vocation . . . like it or not . . . But all the hard work, cleaning & waxing, searching for 36 year old spare parts, and agonizing over maintenance issues . . . is made up for by the admiring looks people give your car . . . they wish they were you.

Here are some pictures

Great Lines

I was just taken with this car and had to have it. It's in pretty good shape but still requires a lot of TLC. People are always commenting on how good it looks, but they don't know about all the little things that keep me busy.

Down By The Creek

Although the car looks really good . . . there's a lot of little things I need to take care of. Some small paint cracks and chips and minor rust. The paint job needs to be redone, but to be done right . . . I need to take the car apart. For now, I'm gonna leave it alone and use the car as a daily driver and just use touch-up paint as required. In the future I may consider taking on the project of a good paint restoration. I'm currently making small improvements and upgrades. More about my maintenance efforts below . . .

Original Interior

The interior is all original and it appears all the rubber body and window seals were recently replaced. It's apparent that all the carpet/upholstery is original. A little work is needed on the back seats. I'm not sure whether to leave everything as is and just do a little sewing & gluing . . . or to spend the bucks and do a refurb. I think I'll probably just wait, and maybe when I get to the stage where I want to take tha car apart for an expert paint job . . . Then that would be the time to do the interior too.

Engine

Well . . . there's been some modifications by the previous owners. I acquired the car in June 03, and I'm not sure of what all was done to it previously, but the spare parts box that came with it included: The old oil filter canister, the old solex carbs and metal mesh air cleaners, and there's a dual point distributer in there too. Also, the presence of old valve springs and a cam shaft lead me to believe that it has been rebuilt at some point. The odometer was at 87,000 which I believe are probably original miles, and I'm hoping the rebuild was fairly recent. A lot of the Mods are for the better: Webber carbs, the stock oil cooler is replaced by an added on radiator type oil cooler mounted in front of the blower housing, a modern spin-on oil filter and probably other's I'm not aware of. I want to be able to drive the car with confidence. I haven't worked on cars or engines since about the time this car was new (I was 17 then), so I'm re-learning how to do my own vehicle maintenance. I can take care of the little stuff like timing, adjusting valves, replacing plugs, etc. . . . but I'm not sure if I'm ready to tackle the inside of the engine just yet. Some of my projects are listed below.
Time will tell.
.

Things I've Done:

Replaced failing Nadella Axles/U-joints with Lobro axles and CV joints.
Replaced Points & Condenser with a Pertronics Ignitor system.
Fixed broken Driver's Seat and raised it 1 inch (temporary until I can Find/Afford a better seat).
Replaced Speedometer cable.
Replaced speedometer (took 3 speedos before I got one that works).
Put new bushings on shifter and shift rod and coupler.
Replaced clock.
Replaced faded Hood Crest with a new one.
Put on new rubber pedal pads.

Things Yet To Do:

I've got materials to do the following:
Replace dented headlight chrome rims.
Replace passenger window.
Rebuild pedal cluster with new bushings>
There are several other detailing & improvement projects floating around in my head.

MY BIGGEST PROBLEM IS: . . . I have so much fun using the car as a daily driver, that I find little time to work on all improvement jobs I want to do.

The End

As you can see from some of my comments above . . . It's not really the end . . . It's just the beginning.
