Jessie Bloom

It was the fall of 1925 when the Farthest North Girl Scout Council came into being. Instrumental in the founding of Girl Scouting in the Interior was a woman named Jessie Bloom. As a young bride in 1912 Jessie accompanied her husband, Bob, from England to Fairbanks, Alaska. Jessie had been a Girl Guide in Dublin, Ireland, so it was only natural for her to turn her young girls from the First Presbyterian's sewing club into our first Girl Scout troop.

Along with the time-honored Girl Scout troop activities, Jessie started summer camp activities at Birch Lake establishing the Girl Scout institution. It is because of this that we have named our summer camp program, Camp Jessie Bloom.

What Jessie always remembered about the early years of Girl Scouting was the spirit of helpfulness and cooperation that existed. "Not only the parents," she recalled years later, "but the whole town it seemed was willing and anxious to get back of our movement."
