Frequently Asked Questions about Girl Scout Camp

Who can attend camp?

Open to ALL…ALL GIRLS, including non-Girl Scouts are welcome to our summer programs.

What is the difference between Brownie Camp and Older Girl Resident Camp?

Brownie Camp is for girls who are entering 1st-3rd grade.  Brownie camp is designed to teach the girls about the outdoors and camping in an age-appropriate environment.  Girls at this camp will have the option of spending the night as part of camp if she is ready for this experience.  If she is not, girls can attend camp during the day and ‘skip’ the overnight stay.

During Brownie Camp girls will achieve a selected try-it, create a wilderness first aid kit and learn basic first aid skills, take hikes, learn about traditional foods and traditional food gathering, hear stories, dance and act, make arts and crafts, toast marshmallows, sing songs, giggle, share stories, listen to guest elders and speakers, and make new friends!

Older Girl Resident camp is for older girls entering 4th-8th grade.  Resident camp allows girls the opportunity to spend the night with fellow campers and counselors.  They will experience more in-depth activities and become part of the camp by actively taking part in Kapers (chores such as cooking, cleaning, saying grace, etc.).

During Resident Camp girls will achieve a selected badge, create a wilderness first aid kit and learn basic first aid, take hikes, participate in a dinner mystery theater, explore the camp and surrounding areas, learn about traditional foods and traditional food gathering, spend the night, learn to cook on a campfire or camp stove, hear stories, make arts and crafts, dance, toast marshmallows, sing songs, giggle, share stories, listen to guest elders and speakers, and make new friends!

 Camp Fee & Camperships

The Farthest North Council with strong support from local organizations offers camperships to girls who otherwise would not be able to attend Camp Jesse Bloom Extreme without financial assistance.  The Council and supporting organizations considers these monies an investment in the development of leadership in the girls and communities that we serve.

Who will supervise the campers?

Adult volunteers and staff from various age groups are chosen to staff Camp Jesse Bloom Extreme for their character, commitment to youth, love of the outdoors and special skills. All receive training prior to the start of camp, and the ratio of adults to campers is one adult for every 15 campers.

What will my daughter eat at camp?

Food at Girl Scout Camp is healthy and plentiful.  We serve three meals a day and include healthy snacks.  We serve healthy food to help girls grow strong.  Given our camp facilities, high food costs, and a lack of access to refrigeration, we are limited in what kinds of food we can offer.  Please help your daughter understand that at camp she will be eating ‘camp food’ which will be different than what she is used to eating at home.  Please do not send candy, pop or other junk foods to camp with your girl.  We feel that this kind of food is not appropriate for Girl Scout Camp.

How do I get my daughter to camp?

Transportation to and from camp is the responsibility of the parents.  Our Council strongly encourages car-pooling or sharing transportation in communities where the camp facility is away from the community.

 How safe is camp?

Camp Jesse Bloom Extreme uses the “buddy system” 24 hours a day.  Our camps follow the national guidelines established by the Girl Scouts of the USA for safety of the site, in the programming and with the campers.  GSUSA is the safest youth serving organization in the world!

 Who is Jesse Bloom?

Jesse Bloom was the first woman in Alaska to organize girls into a Girl Scout Troop.  In 1925 this pioneer from Ireland, familiar with the international Girl Guide movement, saw a need in Alaska for something positive and value based for girls to do.  We name our summer camps after her in recognition of her vision for the girls of Alaska.

Where else are you holding Girl Scout Camp?

As part of the Farthest North Girl Scout Council’s expanding rural services, Camp Jesse Bloom Extreme sessions will be held in Denali, Kotzebue, Unalakleet, Nome, and Barrow.  If your family is traveling to these communities this summer, your daughter is welcome to come to camp with us!
