Older Girl Rural Camp Opportunity
In 2005 the Farthest North Girl Scout Council is offering a chance for up to 5 girls from Fairbanks who are at least 12 years of age by July 1, 2005 to attend Camp Jesse Bloom in the community of Nome, Alaska.
The cost of attending camp will be $XX plus airfare from Fairbanks to Nome. Major air carriers to the region include Alaska Airlines and Frontier Flying. Girls will be met at the airport by Farthest North staff, and will be transported directly to our camp facility just outside of Nome in the pristine tundra.
Meet new girls from many different cultures, make friends in a place that you can’t drive to, and experience the unique tundra ecosystem of the Bering Straits region.
Caribou, salmon, musk ox, foxes and many kinds of birds all inhabit the hills surrounding our camp in Nome. During July beautiful tundra flowers and berries make a tasty addition to the unique ecosystem that is part of our Nome camp.
This year’s theme for rural camp is “Active and Acting.”
ACTIVE!
You will explore the area doing high-adventure activities like hiking, kayaking and canoeing on the Fish River, fishing for salmon, picking berries on the tundra, and learning ways to survive off of the tundra.
ACTING!
You will also draw on the rich cultural heritage in the Bering Straits region and learn about traditional forms of drama such as Inupiaq dancing and storytelling. Camp will also feature a ‘Dinner Mystery’ event that girls will prepare for and act in during camp.
