Fairbanks Conservation Soil & Water
Elodea canadensis infestation in Chena Slough

In September 2010 an invasive plant, Elodea canadensis, was documented growing in several miles of the Chena Slough and the Chena River.

This plant could cause numerous negative impacts to our local waterways, including:

  • degraded fish habitat

  • reduction of native plant species

  • reduced recreational opportunities

  • more difficult boat travel

  • drastic alteration of freshwater habitat

What can Interior Alaska do now?

A group of concerned citizens and key agency personnel met on December 3, 2010 to discuss options for action on this pressing topic.

A steering committee and action committees were formed, and over the winter plans will be made for education, survey, control, research, and funding.

Our community can only hope to control Elodea canadensis through cooperation!  Please get involved today and make a positive difference in our waterway habitats!

Contact Darcy Etcheverry at FCWMA.tech@gmail.com if you would like to get involved!

   Current Known Distribution of Elodea

   canadensis in the Fairbanks Area*

*This distribution is based on a limited late season survey and the absence of a data point does not mean E. canadensis is not growing in that location.  More extensive survey work needs to be conducted in 2011.

Have you seen Elodea canadensis?

If you believe you have seen this plant in other areas of Alaska, please let us know!  If possible, take a photo and GPS coordinates so we may verify.
