It seems everybody is busy these days. You could alm= ost say that people are addicted to busyness. I was meeting with a group of pastors a few weeks ago and we were discussing the need to rest and how b= usyness has become our new idol.

I believe we should have a strong work ethic, but th= at we should also have a strong rest ethic. Isn't that what God modeled for us = in creation? I believe that God wants to communicate with us and that it will require us to be still long enough to hear from Him. I think I could even argue from the Bible that the displays of God's grace, glory, power and presence begins with people who are willing to push the pause button in t= heir life.

If the enemy can keep us distracted by busyness, the= n we will keep trying to run our lives on spiritual fumes. Jesus told us to &#= 8220;Come to me all you who are weary ...and you will find rest for your souls.R= 21; Isn't rest in our souls what we are seeking so desperately? We attempt to mask our real need by deadening our mind with useless entertainment and information. Let's make the time to “Be still and know God” a= nd help make GBC a place of…

The Bee Sting by Dan Shilling

A family drives along in their car, windows rolled d= own, enjoying the warm summer breeze. Suddenly, a big black bee darts in the window and starts buzzing around inside the car. A li= ttle girl, highly allergic to bee stings cringes in the back seat. If she is stung, she could die w= ithin an hour. “Oh, Daddy,&= #8221; she squeals in terror, “it's a bee! It's going to sting me!”<= br>
The father pulls the car over to a stop, and reaches back to try to catch= the bee. Buzzing towards him, t= he bee bumps against the front windshield where the father traps it in his fist. Holding it in his clo= sed hand, the father waits for the inevitable sting. The bee stings the father's hand= and in pain, the father lets go of the bee.&= nbsp; The bee is loose in the car again, and the little girl again panic= s, “Daddy, its going to sting me!”

The father gently says, “No honey, he's not going to sting you now. Look at my hand,” which is where the bee's stinger is.

"Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is= your sting?” I Cor. 15:55

Jesus reminds us to, “Look at my hands.”

A Change of Mind by Michael Blakeney

Ever wonder how the butterfly got its name? It’= ;s not like other pesky flies like the fruit fly and horsefly. Those bugs hang a= round fruits and horses. I have yet to see a swarm of butterflies flock to my bucket of butter. There’s a mystery there, even for the scholars. A= pparently, they tell us that several great grandparents ago our relatives believed t= hat butterflies where witches in disguise that would eat away at their uncove= red butter or milk. I humbly believe a mosquito is a closer kin to a witch th= an a butterfly.

There is another mystery to the butterfly. This crea= ture is completely different from the other flies. It transforms from a fuzzy cra= wling worm into a wonderful, colorful flying creature. Paul uses words that describe repentance in much the same way we describe the transformation of the caterpillar. After honesty comes repentance. Repentance is a changing= of the mind when we begin to think differently. It’s turning away from sin and self, and turning toward Christ. Our thoughts and actions completely change direction. I think C.H. Spurgeon said it best, “T= here must be a divorce between you and your sins. Not a mere separation for a season, but a clear divorce.”

God wants to fill every part of our lives with His l= ove and grace. The Bible says each person should examine their own heart. Be hone= st with God and ask Him to help you seek out the areas of life that need repentance. You will experience the joy of a revived life and relationship with the Father in Heaven.

In Memoriam

Longtime Alaskan Carl E. Shirley, 68, died March 10,= 2008, at Alaska Regional Hospital= , from injuries suffered in an accidental fall.
A funeral was held on Monday, March 17 at Gran= dview Baptist Church in Anchorage. The Rev. Randy Graham officiated.
Carl Shirley was born April 9, 1939, in Johnson City, Tenn., = to John and Mayme Shirley. He attended Happy Valley High School in Ca= rter County, Tenn. He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara A. Lawson, on March 3, 1958, in Johnson Ci= ty.
Carl, with his wife and two daughters, came to Alaska in 1968 while he served in th= e U.S. Air Force. He joined the military in 1956 and served for 23 years. During= his years of service he completed a tour of duty in the Vietnam War. After retiring from the service in 1979, he then went on to retire from Civil Service on Fort Richardson in 199= 4. To keep busy after retirement he worked various part-time jobs for the School District, Denali Seed Co. and many other places.
Carl loved the Alaska outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.
Most of all, he loved working on the homestead with his five grandchildre= n, passing down his many experiences and knowledge. He was an active member = of Grandview Baptist<= /st1:PlaceName> Church in Anchorage. He was a longtime member of Mountain View Lions Club, a charter member of the American Legion and VFW= and a member of the Point MacKenzie Community Council.
"Carl's steadfast faith in God inspired his family to follow in his faith," his family recalled. "He was an inspiration and friend = to many and will be missed by all."
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara; daughters and sons-in-la= w, Deborah and Rodney Price of Palmer, Denise and Layton DiMassimo of Anchor= age; grandaughters, Tierra and Santana DiMassimo of Anchorage; grandsons, Regis and Rio Price of Palmer; grandson and wife, Rodney and Meggan Price of Sequim, Wash.; great-grandsons, Titan and Preston Price of Sequim; sister= s, Jackie Staten, Betty Tipton and Nancy Wright; brother, Ralph Shirley, all= of Tennessee; and many nieces, nephews and in-laws.
Carl was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Bill Shirley; and nephew, Tommy Shirley.
