Demolition Begins

Demolition.

We rented scaffolding from a local commercial provider. The scaffolding footprint is 5' x 7', and each unit is 6' tall. We stacked three units to put the top platform 18' above our deck. The planks that form a surface to stand on the scaffolding are aluminum beams covered with ¾" plywood. Although not necessary in this case, we tied the scaffold to our deck using four 1,500 pound load straps tightened with ratchets. This provided a reasonably steady platform to work on as well as a ladder-like structure that made it easy to climb between levels.

In this photo, I'm using a Sawzall to remove a portion of the chase that penetrates the roof sheathing. Water damage to the chase siding is visible on the closest face about 3' below the platform level I'm standing on. Water flowing down the face of the chase pooled behind cedar 1" x 6" trim that covered the z-flashing installed between upper and lower pieces of siding. When I discovered the damage, the rot had nearly perforated the entire thickness of the siding.

Next: More demolition.
