Glen & Kris Denning → Home Improvement → Entryway Tile < Previous Next >
Our entryway floor was originally covered in "builder's quality" vinyl. There's always a lot of dirt tracked in from the garage, so the white vinyl didn't hold up too well, and it really showed the dirt. Our solution was to redo the floor in ceramic tile. We selected an Italian 12" x 12" ceramic tile that was done in the style of travertine for primary coverage, and a brown marble for accent tiles.
We're very pleased with the results of tiling our entry. The light tan travertine and the dark brown marble look very nice together, and they do a good job of hiding the dirt between sweepings. The diagonal pattern actually makes the entry look a bit larger. The people at Artistic Tile here in town (as well as their contractor / customers) were helpful with advice on the basics of tiling over vinyl. Mary Lange (Kris' sister) and her husband lay tile professionally, and Mary was also very helpful in evaluating our plans and materials in this project.
The pictures in this series start with installing the underlay.
