Here's a picture of some of the first rails we installed. There are 17 posts in the new fence, each one installed in a 42" deep hole with concrete. The dirt we removed from all the post holes totaled 2 cubic yards!
High-stress posts like corners and big elevation changes were set in wet concrete, while the other posts were set in a dry concrete mix. Ground water will eventually infiltrate the dry mix and harden the mixture around the post.
This particular run of fence will have cedar planks installed on both the inside and outside of the fence because it is visible from within the backyard and from the street. The planks attach to doublers mounted on the inside of the top and bottom rails. The doublers are narrower than the rails so that the cedar planks will end up flush with the vertical face of the rail.
