The first picture shows an upper rail with a doubler installed. This doubler provides a surface inside the rail on which the cedar planks will be mounted.
The second picture shows a corner post with two lower rails coming together. The doublers haven't been installed yet.
Each 2" x 4" rail is set in a 5/8" dado cut with a hand saw and chisel. Simpson angle brackets secured with screws reinforce the joint.
