New Hearth

New Hearth

Here's a picture showing the basic structure of the new hearth. The hearth was shimmed level and then screwed to the floor and wall before the stringers were added.

Kris and I tried to carry the old fireplace downstairs to get it out of the way for a while. When we discovered it was too heavy to carry handily, I removed the ceramic liner - about 80 pounds worth. Although it looked like a half dozen screws would free the ceramic liner, it actually took more than a hundred screws to get to the liner.

The original fireplace was constructed of thin sheetmetal, and the whole thing had a disappointing quality. We decided to leave the old fireplace as a pile of parts and replace it with something nicer. Barely visible to the right is our new fireplace. This unit is made by Napoleon in Canada and the U.S. It is fired by natural gas, and puts out 30,000 BTUs.

With the frame complete, we're ready to cover the deck of the hearth.
