I had cut down a 40' birch tree last year to make room for the shed. The resulting stump is still connected to an adjacent tree. Despite some risk to the standing tree, we decided to remove the roots on this side of the stump. I had to use a Sawzall and a fire ax to get everything. The large roots extended in a tangled mess about six feet away from the trunk.
