Storage Shed

When we built a retaining wall in our backyard a few years ago, we also excavated a pad for a shed. Sheds are never big enough, and as our planned shed increased in size, our pad needed to match it. The shed location is very close to the corridor where commercial power, cable, and telephone approach the house underground. Because we wanted to extend the pad closer to the underground utilities, we had to dig everything by hand. After we hauled out 5 yards of dirt — one shovel full at a time — we brought in about 3 yards of clean fill to finish the new shed pad.

The excavation was finished early in the summer, so that left a fair amount of time to get everything else done. But things never seem to go as fast as I imagine, and progress was slow through most of the summer. Our project was helped along by a week off I had planned in August. During that week, Kris and I got everything done except the trim, doors, roof sheathing and shingles. Over the next few weeks, we worked on the weekends to finish the shed.

This series starts with the excavation.
