When we widened our driveway from 11' to 18' at the street end, the existing apron that crosses the sidewalk was no longer wide enough for our driveway.
After determining the size of the required excavation, I dug a hole 6" deep adjacent to the existing driveway apron. With the top soil removed, I added 2" of 5/8" chipped stone as a base for the new concrete. This material provides good drainage and packs easily.
After adding the wooden form on the right, I drilled eight holes 1" into the adjacent concrete slabs for ½" rebar. The rebar runs parallel and perpendicular to the curb, and is laid in an 18" grid. After the steel was wired together, everything was ready to place concrete.
