My Gardening Plan

For my tomatoes and peppers I plan to use containers. I did plant some tomatoes in containers a couple of years ago up here in Alaska and they didn't do too bad. Several plants flowered but never produced. The number one mistake I made here was that the containers weren't big enough to start with. This cost me! No one could tell me how big they should be. I learned on my own. Perhaps these will be TOO big but I'd rather it be too big than too small. I'm going to use those utility buckets with ropes that you can find at Kmart. The ropes will make them easier to use and the size is more than adequate.

I'm also going to try planting some on a hill. I'm going to make my row up higher than usual and we'll see how those do. If they do well like that then I can do that next year instead of containers.

With that idea, I plan on planting my beans like that too. Up high.

I thought of this because that was one problem we had in Georgia before the flood. Our rows were high rows and they kept drying out not to mention they were just too hot. We should've just made regular rows but we didn't.

The rest I understand should grow fairly well. I'm planning on growing summer squash, peas, onions, carrots, lettuce, cucumbers, broccoli, and zucchini. Hmmm. I just realized I don't have any brussels sprouts. I'll have to get some of those.

I'm planting from seed. If I purchase plants themselves then I'm one step closer to the grocery counter and what fun is that? I'm using a plain 'ol flourescent light to start my seeds. I'm not going to start them outdoors because the growing season is so short.

One mistake I made (again in Georgia) is I didn't acclimate the plants well enough when we transplanted them. I did well with my container tomatoes on that.

I'm not going to go through the trouble to make a cold frame, nor a green house. If push comes to shove there's always good 'ol plastic should a late frost come on suddenly.

That's the basic plan. Would you like to see my planting schedule?
