LORETO, BAJA SUR, MEXICO 2005

We spent eleven days in Loreto, Baja, Sur in February-March 2005.  Most of the time we stayed in Loreto but rented a car for two days (at $81 per day including full insurance coverage) and drove north as far as Santa Rosalia where there is a metal framed church designed by Gustav Eiffel, the guy who also designed the famous tower in Paris.

If you took away the palm trees and the great weather you might think you were on the rocky beaches of Southeast Alaska or the rocky coast of northwest Ireland with a huge spruce/cedar forest.  So you have to be able to do without nice beaches without driving to them.

I think the best way to see Baja would be driving it in an RV.  Renting cars or taking taxis can get expensive.  We took a cab for a day and went up to the beautiful little village of San Javier but it cost $90US for the day.  Nice drive and worth it but I wouldn't do it daily.

Here are the photos:

Kathy hardly ever drinks beer at home but in Loreto, Mexico it was pretty hot.

This kid would have kicked that soccer ball all day if his dad hadn't gotten tired.

Mission de San Javier in the mountains west of Loreto.

Mission de San Loreto, the oldest church in Baja.

The area around Loreto was one of the trashiest places I've ever been. People just dump their trash everywhere.
