    Local Tour

I offer this to those of you who just want a taste of Sitka life and are short on time or do not want to spend much time on the water. This tour offers a chance to learn about the town's past and present, places to shop, eat, and recreate. The boat will skirt Sitka and provides a nice venue to introduce visitors to this great place.

Among the wildlife that may be seen on this tour are Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus), sea otters and bald eagles. There are structures from World War II to see, as well as significant Tlingit cultural sites and sites from the Russian era, including the 1804 Battle of Sitka. Of note, the population of sea otters is increasing rapidly at Sitka and they can be found very close to town - this is not something that was achievable just a few years ago, and we are, of course, extremely pleased by this.

    Tour time: 1 hour.
Cost: $50 per person with a 4 person minimum.

    Silver Bay / Medvejie Hatchery

Silver Bay / Medvejie Hatchery - Sitka, Alaska     This is my favorite tour, and the favorite of many other people, as it runs entirely in fairly calm water. Most boat tours at Sitka go out into areas that are affected by the open ocean, which can often mean swells and/or chop. If you're worried about seasickness but still want to explore the wonders of the Sitka coast up close, this is the tour for you!

We leave downtown Sitka and spend approximately 30 minutes on our way to the Medvejie Hatchery. Along the way we will look for wildlife in the area and will stop for anything of interest. Near town I would like to share some past and present information about Sitka. As in all of the tours, I hope that you will leave with a keen appreciation of how awesome our town is.

At the hatchery site we will disembark and spend approximately one hour touring the facility. How much time we spend here depends on individual level of interest. At this site, we will go behind-the-scenes and you will have access to many areas that other visitors do not.

Hatchery operations are seasonal and revolve around the life cycle of salmon. In May and June you will see mostly juvenile salmon with some adult salmon beginning to show up at the facility. As the summer progresses, more and more of the “show” will be experiencing the throng of returning adult salmon. After spending three years in the North Pacific, these fish are heading home to spawn. Juvenile fish are also present at this time. August and September are exceptionally busy months and full of activity.

After leaving the hatchery, we may have time to head down Silver Bay. The bay was alive with mining activity 100 years ago. Some remnants of that day still remain. In the summer months, Salmon Lake Creek at the head of Silver Bay will be full of returning salmon.

Give this tour some consideration – most visitors come away rather astounded at what they've just seen!

    Tour time: 2 hours.
Cost: $70 per person with a 2 person minimum.

    Sitka Wildlife Tour

A curious sea otter near Sitka, Alaska     After leaving downtown Sitka, this tour will take you out into the waters of Sitka Sound and surrounding area. We may head north into Nakwasina Sound, out into the open waters of Sitka Sound to St. Lazaria Island, or south to the Goddard Hot Springs area. There is no shortage of options for beautiful places to visit here. Again, I will listen to your interests and do my best to meet your needs. Weather conditions play an integral role in recreating around Sitka and may help determine where we will go on our adventure. There are so many options of places to visit that we will find something to suit your needs.

Among the possible wildlife sightings along this incredibly rich coast are humpback and/or gray whales, harbor seals, Steller sea lions, sea otters, bald eagles and (less likely, but possible) brown bears, along with other animals.

    Tour time: 2.5 hours.
Cost: $130 per person with a 2 person minimum.
For cash payment, the price of this tour is reduced to $120.

I have found that 2.5 hours is just enough time for most people, but we can work together to customize time frames to fit your schedule. If everyone on the boat agrees that they would like to extend this tour (it happens fairly often with this tour!), we charge $150 per hour total - with 6 people on board, that's $25 per person per hour.

    Other Tour Options

If none of the above tours appeals to you, give me a call or send an email! We can talk about options, what your interests are, and how much time you have to spend. I've shuttled people to local cabins and beaches, spent entire days exploring the area, and just went out in the evening, anchored up and had supper. Spending the entire day with us allows us to travel a bit further from town to explore even more bays, passes, and some incredible wildlife and scenery. We can drop crab pots, or just idle around and see some new sites. There are so many beautiful places to see that the day will pass quickly. Lunch, snacks, and beverages can be provided.

I love being out on the water and meeting new people, with the mission being that you enjoy your visit to Sitka. For a wide range of other things to do at Sitka, see the Sitka Convention and Visitors Bureau Web site.
