May 30, 2005 a kitten was brought to MVK that had been slammed in a door and was paralyzed. Chance was 6 wks old and one of 6 kittens in the litter. We
were told the mom cat would not nurse him now that he was injured. He had
not been taken to the vet. He could only
move his head and was very small.
He was started on medications and anothernursing mom cat took him in and nursed him when we held him up to her. She loved him like her own. He lived in a Kleenex box and was taken to work with his foster mom. Hand feeding and helping him go to the bathroom. Keeping clean was difficult.
Soon we realized that Chance would not re-gain the use of his front paws from the wrist down. The nerve had been damaged and he would need surgery to help him walk. But, not until he was 1 year old. He needed to finish growing before the Vet could do the surgery successfully. He needed to have a plate put in his wrist that would keep it permanently straight. They would also need to borrow some bone from his pelvis to put over the plated area. This would hopefully grow over that area. Thus allowing his leg to stay in the walking position. Hopefully, he would learn how to walk on it that way.
Since the nerves have been damaged, he does not have much feeling. This is a problem because now he could injure the foot and notknow it. He will need to have a leather bootie permanently on the foot oncesurgery was completed to protect it.
Chance's surgery is $3,500.00 with all the x-rays etc... This is for one foot! Yes, a lot of money for one kitty. This little kitten had a zest for life and was a survivor. He struggles every day to act like a normal cat.
He has a controlled environment in a bedroom that is padded and set up for his convienice. He can walk and jump, landing on the bones of the wrist. These need to stay wrapped with a lot of padding. He knows he is handicapped, but still is a very sweet, happy big kitty now.
