Mat Valley Kitties: A crusade to save cats |
|||||||||
| Mat Valley Kitties Rescue was founded by Susan Helmericks, responding to the need to reduce the number of cats and kittens being euthanized at the animal shelter and being abandoned throughout the Mat-Su Valley Borough. Transforming her garage into a temporary holding area for cats and kittens, she has worked with fellow volunteers to feed, shelter and care for discarded felines while seeking permanent homes for them.
This work has continued as the demand has increased. Because demand is so great, Mat Valley Kitties Rescue primarily takes in kittens and pregnant and nursing cats. Other adult cats should be delivered to another rescue group, such as the Humane Society in Anchorage. As the population of humans in the Valley has increased, so has the number of abandoned kittens. Only through the help of volunteers can Helmericks continue to offer this service to some of the Valley's smallest and cutest residents. Mat Valley Kitties charges an adoption fee for each animal. The fee represents a portion of the average cost of caring for each of these kittens until it can be adopted, including shots, feed, litter and veterinary care, which may include spaying or neutering. No one at Mat Valley Kitties is paid for their roles as foster caregivers to these kittens and cats. Donations of cat supplies, cash and services are vital to the survival of Mat Valley Kitties Rescue. The other vital need is for foster homes that can care for these little felines. Anyone who can help this cause should contact Susan Helmericks, 841-7711. |
