December 2005 - Whale bones moved from Gibson Cove to Kodiak Fisheries Research Center

After a year and a half at Gibson Cove, the whalebones needed a heated and dry location to dry out. Dr. Bradley Stevens, Acting Director of the Kodiak Fisheries Research Center, offered the Kodiak Gray Whale Project a new home in his facility. In December of 2005, a group of volunteers and Fish and Wildlife Service personnel moved the bones into their new location on Near Island. Paul Banyas built some spiffy custom wooden racks for the bones including a special, wheeled cart for the 8-foot skull.
