The following drawings and paintings on this page are examples of Detlef's beginnings as an artist.
Underlying the artistic evolution is a fascination with fish, but it was the idea to trace fish on paper
with a pencil that gave rise to "Lifesize Fish Watercolor Paintings".
Please click on any of the images for a detailed view.

Colored pencil
"Tobender Hecht"

Germany 1976

This High school art project is the first
fish drawing Detlef ever produced.

12 inch Yellow Perch
"Flu
ßbarsch"
Finland,  Aug. 1977

Two lifesize fish pencil drawings were done in 1977
during a fishing trip to the Aland Islands.
The first pencil drawing of a Northern Pike no longer exists.
But you can see the second drawing of a Yellow Perch.

"Blinker"
Germany 1979

These 1978 Colored pencil drawings were copies
of the first two 1977 Pencil drawings and
published in a German fishing magazine in 1979.

"Dolly Varden"
Alaska, Dec. 1982

First watercolor done from notes with a
cheap water set for kids. This fish was sampled
during Detlef's first job for the Alaska Depart-
ment of Fish & Game.

33 inch Steelhead
"4kg Steelhead"
Alaska, June 1985

Second watercolor done with commercial quality
watercolors from a photo. This fish was caught
by Detlef in a local Juneau stream.

"3kg Pink Salmon"
Alaska, July 1985

Third watercolor painted from pieces of the fish
which were kept in the freezer. The fish was caught
by the artist during a summer job for
ADF&G at Excursion Inlet/Alaska.

47 inch Northern Pike
"12.5 kg Hecht"
Germany, Oct. 1985

Fourth watercolor also painted from fish pieces kept
in freezer. (A technique called "Paint and eat").
This fish was caught by a commercial gillnetter in Germany.
All paintings after this one were painted from slides.
