We chose the name of Brendan for this church after many meetings and
the consideration of several other names. The name seemed appropriate for
a wide variety of reasons.
The fact that Brendan is associated with the sea and seafarers and the fact
that his symbol is a raven made it very suitable for a congregation in Southeast
Alaska.
He is a Celtic saint, and the tradition of the Anglican Communion stretches
back to the Celtic church, long before Roman missionaries arrived in the
British Isles.
He was interested in the spread of the Gospel and the formation and establishment
of new congregations, and that seemed to fit our situation.
But, most of all, he and a small group were embarking on voyages of faith
with only their trust in the Lord to guide them and to guard them. St Brendan's
Church, we hope, will always have a a new horizon to sail to and a new land
to explore.
