LOOK WHAT THEY'VE DONE TO MY HOUSE, MA !!

It's the end of the first full week of June 2000 as I write this, and the thought has crossed my mind that it's the end of more than just that.  Our upstairs remodel project has crossed the line from the years-long planning and talking stage to the "doing" stage.  With footing and foundation pemits in hand, our contractor has shifted into high gear.

The first part of the effort is digging the new foundation for our addition, and tearing down what is inside the existing structure.  Still awaiting the structural permit, which should be in hand Monday, our guy minded his time by tearing out the existing sheetrock.  That much he can legally do.  He will modify the current 2x4 stud system to 2x6, reinsulate, and re-sheetrock.

The big kitchen counter looks strangely out of place in the middle of the kitchen

All the current appliances go.  We donated them, plus the salvageable kitchen cabinetry, to a local charitable foundation.  I have to get some tax write-off from all this, ya know!

The big worry for me during the excavation phase was the status of the 50-year old underground oil storage tank in the back yard.  Those things can be ticking time bombs.  Carlton yanked it out of the ground Friday, sticked it, and found 7 inches of fuel inside.  At least he found it inside the tank, and not in the surrounding soil!  I guess I will have to have the old fuel pumped out, the tank cut in half, and haul it off to the dump for a proper burial.  It actually appeared to be in decent shape.

I say, "Tanks a lot", for not leaking!
