About Ninilchik . . .
Ninilchik was settled by Russian Native families in the 1830's. The Russian Orthodox Church which is poised on a hilltop above the old village is probably the most photographed view on the Kenai Peninsula. Two small streams, Deep Creek and Ninilchik River, provide excellent salmon and trout fishing. Local regulations restrict King salmon fishing in these rivers to Saturday, Sunday, and Monday beginning Memorial Day weekend. Ninilchik River is open three consecutive weekends and Deep Creek five weekends. Then in August the silver salmon enter the rivers. These fish are very acrobatic and hard fighters. During minus tides a person can dig a bucket of razor clams along the beaches of Cook Inlet. Clamming is excellent just a few miles from our place. We will be happy to take you to the hot spots and show you how to dig if we have time. Or we will give you directions and you can go after the clams yourself. Wildlife is also abundant in the area. Hundreds of bald eagles spend their summer here and can be photographed perched in trees, soaring in the sky above you or munching on a fish carcass on the beach. Moose come out of the hills in late May to calve along the river banks or near the bluff where predators are less likely to harm newborns. They wander around the area feeding on the alders during the summer.
Forty minutes north of Ninilchik are Soldotna and Kenai, and the world
famous Kenai River with runs of king, red, and silver salmon.
Forty minutes south of Ninilchik is Homer and Kachemak Bay with
its marine life and scenery. It
is a "must see". |
