Each spring, bowhead whales migrate from the Bering Sea into the Chukchi and then across the northern coast of Alaska into the Beaufort, to their summer waters above Canada.
Along the way, as has been the case for thousands of years, the whales are met by Iñupiat Eskimo whale hunters who wait for them in skin boats. Each crew waits for the whale that they hope will give itself to them, and through them, to the survival of the Iñupiat community and culture.
