Winter Ptarmigan

Ptarmigan hunting is one way to survive the long, cold winters in Alaska.  As the days grow longer toward the coming of spring, the sun gets up high enough to take the nip out of sub-zero temperatures.

This photo was taken about ten miles off of the Denali Highway during March. Bob and his buddies found a nice valley with a lot of birds. At the time the limit was 20 birds a day. Recent developments in snowmobile technology have made previously inaccessible areas easy to get into. This put more pressure on the birds. As a consequence the limit was lowered to 10 a day.
