Waterfowling

Wayne Anthony Ross, a prominent Anchorage attorney, NRA director, gun show organizer, and former candidate for Governor of Alaska, is shown with a brace of ducks taken with Bob on the morning of Alaska Day 2000 (Wed. Oct. 18).  Wayne is proudly displaying two Scaup, one Bufflehead, and two Mallards that he shot with using non-toxic Tungsten shot from his Belgian Browning Auto-5 shotgun. Wayne had acquired an Auto-5 many years earlier, but hadn't a chance to use it until this trip.  He proved to be a great shot, even bagging the two Scaup from one flock. October 18th provided the last ice-free duck hunt in 2000. The day brought migrating birds which worked well to the decoys and duck call. Bob also shot five birds, bringing their total bag to ten birds.

The Susitna Flats, located across the Knik Arm of Cook Inlet from Anchorage, offers some of the best duck shooting in Southcentral Alaska. Jim Houk is retrieving a duck from one of the many potholes that cover the flats.  On a clear "Bluebird" day such as this you can literally see for hundreds of miles.  The Alaska Range visible in the background is over fifty miles from where this photo was taken.
