Because of the long winters with short days and low angle sunlight, Southcentral Alaska gets, and keeps, a lot of snow. Usually by mid-October the ground is covered
and not seen again until late April. This workman's shed photographed in February displays the season's accumulation.
Typically, the snow is so deep and dry that it is impossible to travel on foot without snowshoes. Even with snowshoes every footstep sinks in several feet, making a short hike a lot of work.
