Conference participants were present from
France, the Czech-Republic, the United States, and the Siberian
and Baltic regions of Russia. Attendence varied daily but is
estimated at more than 200 for some days and events. Of the nine
Americans who attended, eight were from Alaska. These included
Tlingit Kiksa'adi leader Ray Wilson and Tlingit weaver Terri
Rofkar, sponsored by Sitka National Historical Park. In a surprise
ceremony in the Buryat Republic, both Ray and Terri, along with
Dawn Black, Dee Longenbaugh, and Sue Thorsen were ceremonially
adopted into the Buryat. In an earlier surprise ceremony, Ray
adopted two of our Russian hosts, Vladimir Tikhonov and Yury
Lihkin, into the Kiksa'adi Clan.
The conference was well organized, with time
allowances in the afternoons and evenings for special organized
trips to museums and cultural events.
