Location
Perched at the 2900' elevation level on the southwestern side of
Haleakala, on Thompson Road off Highway 37.
A stone's throw away from
Grandma's Coffee House.
Weather
Temperatures during the day range between 70 to 80 degrees. Night time temperatures in the winter can dip to
the mid-'50s, so bring a sweater for star gazing! The air is dryer and more comfortable than at sea level, where
humidity and sugar cane smoke can create problems for some visitors. Check out
Glenn
James' Maui Weather Today for daily
weather reports for Maui and the Upcountry.
History of The Star Lookout
Lisa Starr developed this special property in the early '70s and raised her son, Kualono, high on the slopes of
Haleakala. The caretakers' home was originally an office building of the Puunene Dairy, located near the town of
Kahului. The house itself is over 100 years old.
In 1978 Lisa and a friend designed and built the guest cottage in its current setting. Lisa and her extended family of
17 have enjoyed countless Thanksgivings together at The Star Lookout.
Janice and Steve Tower purchased The Star Lookout, retaining that "0ld Maui" spirit upon which
it was founded.
Aloha,
Steve and Janice
