All information is taken from the book "Gards og ættesoge for Luster kommune" by Lars E. Øyane. I don't know the primary source of each piece, but I gather the author knows what he is doing.
A little bit about Norwegian naming practices in this period. People would normally be known by three names, a first name (like Gjert), a surname that was really a patronymic (like Christenson) and a farm name (like Ottum). The farm name should be regarded more like an address, as it would change when the person moved to another farm. (This also explains why a lot of people dropped the farm name when they moved to the US). It was necessary to add the farm part to the name to identify people, the common practice of naming children after their older relatives led to a lot of similar names.
The practice of changing the farm or address part of the name whenever a person moved (which a majority did at least once in their lifetime) creates a problem for genealogists. Which farm name do you register? There are presently two "schools", one that uses the farm name at birth, and one that prefer the farm name the person had when he or she died. Since Lars E. Øyane obviously uses the last alternative, and because I don't want to make this more confusing than necessary, I have followed his practice (although I still think using the name at birth is a better idea).
When I write about the place of birth or death for a person I will use the following rules:
If the there is only one name mentioned (like Ottum) the person will (normally) come from one of the main households on the farm. If the person comes from, or died at a cottars place belonging to a farm, I will write the name of the farm with the cottars place in a parentheses (like Ottum(Haugen 2/ Jutahaugen)).
I also will use the Norwegian dating format, day.month.year, which means 01.04.1842 is 1. April 1842.
I also follow the practice from the book of using the present-day dialect names of the farms when referring to them as a place, and the old spelling when using them as a name. Dahlsoren therefore becomes Dalsøyri when referring to the farm, Dalsøren when using it as a name.
