Team News
Team Kaladi-Subway started fast this season at the Tour of Gila, a grueling stage race in New Mexico in early May. Team captains, Tom Peichel and Jamey Stull joined Kaladi-Subway riders Matt Jordan, Tony Turrini and Steve Mulder, racing Cat 3s and Masters Divisions. This was a particularly difficult series because of the heat and altitude, and due to the relatively early season for this Alaskan team. Even so, Team Kaladi-Subway finished respectably within this all-star field of the best riders from Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. This is the first season of the Kaladi-Subway Junior Team. Any young rider committed to racing is welcome to join this development team. A team of 8 kids raced at the April Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, California. Based on their results at Sea Otter and at the 2006 Byrds Stage Race, the kids were invited to attend the USA Cycling Region Development Camp in California. Josh and Jessie Yeaton and Hannah Summers placed well at the U.S. Nationals in Pennsylvania. Josh placed 7th in the 17/18 road race among a field of over 150 riders. The girls scored top-ten finishes in the 15/16 road race with Jessie in 2nd and Hannah in 8th. Kinsey Loan is set for a break-out year as she nearly outsprinted her mom, Tour of Anchorage Champion Sheryl Loan, in the final TOA stage. Sheryl proved that you don't get old you get better by setting the Clark's Road Hill Climb Record, adding to her existing records on Potter, Hiland, Stewart and Hatcher Pass. Other individual highlights are plentiful. Andy Pohl proved to be one of the most versatile bike racers in the club. Andy set a new record in the 12-hour division of the 24-Hours of Kincaid, riding 12 laps and surpassing the old 9-lap benchmark. Andy went on to finish the Fireweed 400 a mere two weeks later. He also won second place in the overall Kincaid MTB Series points chase, fourth place overall for the Arctic Cyclocross Series, and third place overall in the Alaska State MTB Championships. Matt Jordan claimed the Tour of Anchorage title for the third consecutive year, conceding the Kincaid Road Race stage to junior rider Josh Yeaton. Yeaton finished second to Jordan in the GC. On a sad note we had to say good-bye to our friend and teammate, Jim Love. Jim was an enthusiastic and dedicated racer for many years in the Arctic Bicycle Club and a treasured member of our team. Jim was proud to be a member of the Kaladi-Subway team and it was a highlight of his last year of life. We miss Jim very much. Team Kaladi-Subway wishes to thank its generous sponsors for supporting its riders to a successful bicycle racing season!
